Optimizing Performative Learning

Machine learning systems are increasingly used for decisions that affect people’s lives, such as loan approval or hiring. But once deployed, these systems can change the data they later learn from. For example, a hiring algorithm trained on past data may learn to favor men if men were historically hired more often. If the algorithm then recommends more male candidates, the next training dataset will contain even more men among successful hires. This creates a feedback loop: biased decisions produce biased data, which reinforces future biased decisions. This phenomenon is called performative learning: the model affects the data distribution it is meant to predict. In this talk, we will introduce this setting and present two results on how to optimize performance in the long term, rather than only at a single time step.
