Aims and scope. At the intersection of statistics, numerical analysis and various fields of applied mathematics, this workshop focuses on computational methods for probability distributions supported on manifolds, specifically on submanifolds of high dimensional Euclidean spaces. These probability distributions arise in Bayesian statistics, nonparametric econometrics, hypothesis testing and molecular dynamics to name a few fields. Specifically they arise in situations where random variables describing the objects of interest need to satisfy hard nonlinear constraints. The objective of this workshop is to discuss theoretical approaches and numerical methods related to this topic, including: the identification of submanifolds from data, the sampling of measures supported on (sub)manifolds, the projection and discretisation of stochastic dynamics onto submanifolds, and applications to various fields.
The 2-day workshop will feature speakers from different disciplines, short lightning talks and a poster session to review recent advances on the topic, and to identify unifying aspects of the theme, and the most important avenues of research. The event will gather approximately 30 participants (attendance upon invitation only).
